MBK School Family Leadership Council (FLC)
Framework & Guidelines
Vision: To create a genuine home-school-community partnership where families are empowered as co-leaders in fostering an inclusive, high-achieving, and vibrant school culture aligned with the values and vision of MBK School.
Mission: The Family Leadership Council (FLC) serves as a strategic advisory body that collaborates with school leadership to enhance the educational and social-emotional well-being of every student. The FLC leverages the diverse expertise, cultural wealth, and energy of our families to support the school's mission, ADEK compliance, and strategic goals.
1. Core Principles
- Inclusivity & Diversity: The FLC actively seeks representation from all segments of the school community (e.g., different grade levels, nationalities, backgrounds, family structures).
- Collaboration, Not Confrontation: The FLC operates as a partner to the school administration, working with them to solve problems and seize opportunities.
- Action-Oriented: The focus is on actionable goals, projects, and support, not just discussion.
- Transparency: Communications and decisions are shared openly with the wider parent community.
- Positive Impact: All initiatives must aim to directly or indirectly improve the student experience and learning outcomes.
2. Structure & Composition
The FLC is structured to be strategic and representative, moving beyond a general committee.
3. Key Focus Areas (The "Pillars" of the FLC)
The FLC’s work is organized into permanent sub-committees, each with a clear focus:
- Academic & Student Life Pillar:
- Supports academic initiatives (e.g., reading challenges, STEM fairs).
- Organizes student clubs and mentorship programs leveraging parent expertise.
- Provides feedback on homework policies and student well-being.
Community & Culture Pillar:
- Plans and runs major community events (National Day, International Day, Family Iftar, Cultural Celebration).
- Leads initiatives to welcome new families and foster an inclusive school culture.
- Manages a dedicated FLC social media page/group to share positive news and updates.
Communication & Engagement Pillar:
- Improves home-school communication channels (e.g., suggests improvements to newsletters, apps).
- Translates key messages into relevant languages if needed.
- Conducts annual family surveys to gauge satisfaction and gather ideas.
Policy & Advocacy Pillar:
- Reviews and provides family perspective on draft school policies (e.g., BYOD, Behavior, Homework) before they are finalized.
- Does not set policy, but provides crucial feedback to ensure policies are family-friendly and clear.
- Advocates for family needs in a collaborative manner with school leadership.
4. Operational Guidelines
- Meetings: Held monthly during the school year. Minutes are taken and shared publicly.
- Decision Making: strives for consensus. If a vote is needed, it is based on a simple majority.
- Communication: A dedicated email address (e.g., [email protected]) and a private channel (e.g., WhatsApp Group only for FLC members) for efficient communication.
- Code of Conduct:
- Maintain confidentiality when necessary.
- Respect all opinions and model positive behavior.
- Support the final decisions of the council and the school leadership.
- Adhere to the school’s values and policies at all times.
5. How This Replaces & Improves Upon a Traditional Parent Council
This framework positions families as true partners in the educational journey, leveraging their collective strength to directly contribute to making MBK School an exceptional place for every child.
